MARVEOLUS SPECTACULAR
This book's cover alone is worth it all!!!! Contains "fresh" photos of Scarlett contenders as well as documenting the quest for the "right cast".

This book is a MUST for all GWTW collectors!

Great condition with well kept book jacket. Smooth transaction. Delighted with book.

Perfect!
It's the best Gone With the Wind book I've read, besides GWTW itself! Terrific photos! Covers everything from Margaret Mitchell, to the stars of the movie! I recomend it to anyone who loves Gone With the Wind!

Troubled Waters
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (January, 1969)
Author: Daniel Pratt, Mannix
Average review score:

Good reading...
The story line is a bit allegorical, but still very enjoyable. As another reviewer noted, if you like "Watership Down", you will enjoy this book also.

Highly recommended
This book focuses on ecology, but in a "non-preachy" way. It resembles "Watership Down" in that it personifies animals, but more closely defines the characters as animals. Mr. Mannix does an excellent job of telling a story that's fun to read, but which is also thought provoking. I highly enjoyed it.

This book touched something deep inside of me! #1
Good book

Coyote Run
I like it. Would be nice to have it in a movie!

The Saga of the Remington Man
When his parents are brutally murdered, six-year-old Abraham Chesterfield's world is turned upside down. His life quickly becomes that of a slave to his own extended family until the owner of Remington Arms observes Abe's strong work ethic and arranges an apprentice-ship for him as a gunsmith. Abe, finally free from the clutches of his ruthless relatives, pours his heart and sole into learning his new craft. Abe excels in his work and wins the respect of those around him. Late one night while alone in the factory, Abe confronts a band of Secessionists who break into Remington Arms. When the identity of the men is revealed, Abe realizes the danger he would place upon his friends if he stayed so he leaves and heads west. What follows is an account of his journey, where he finds a lost love and friends from his Remington days. But the Secessionists are always on his trail which keeps Abe moving. Can Abe outrun or outsmart the bad guys? Can the lost love be rekindled? And, are his friends really his friends?
I really enjoyed this book. It's got all the right stuff...horses, guns, fights, bad guys, good guys, prairie towns with beer swillin' cowboys and the occasional pretty lady. The author has cleverly built in multiple plot twists that kept my light burning late into the night. Just when you think you've got the next move pegged, you realize you're wrong! This is the first of a two part series by novelist Dave Pratt whom I was lucky enough to hear speak at a promotional book signing recently. I anxiously await Dave's next tome and am certain we will be treated to many others in the years to come.

Enjoying Birds in Hawaii
Published in Paperback by Mutual Publishing (2002)
Author: H. Douglas Pratt
Average review score:

Excellent logistics guide
I found this book to be indespensible in identifying where to go and how to get there. A section on each of the major islands, and then regions on a per island basis makes it easy to use. Pratt identifies which birds you can expect to see in each of the birding spots identified. Although color plates of many of the species are included, this is not a species classification guide per-se. You'll need a separate guide for that. But you can't see them if you don't know where to go or how to get there, and that's where this book shines. I shutter to think of the time we would have wasted without it.

Informative, accurate, attractive
Pratt takes the reader island by island, site by site, through all the best spots to find birds in the islands. Illustrated with excellent color photographs, the guide tells you what to expect in terms of species to see, directions on getting there, and possible hazards (mud, rough roads, irritable hunters, etc.). Following the site descriptions, Pratt adds a section on each species to be found in the islands, listing the places it is most likely to be found. The emphasis is on clear information, but Pratt's lucid interesting writing style makes the book a pleasure to read as well. I have used it on Kaua'i and Hawai'i and would not think of birding the other islands without it. Indispensible!

Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion/Book and Disk (Aiaa Education)

Good, but needs some changes
This is a good book: easy to understand and apply. However, some changes are in order. In the Special Topics sectionl, a table presents the thermal stresses and thermal durability of several materials--without specifying the temperature and pressure for the materials. As material properties change drastically at high temperatures, such tables are incomplete without the above information. I hesitated in using the information in my design report, and asked my materials and manufacturing professor about it as well. He agreed that this information must be provided for the table to be of any use. It would also help if you specify the units after presenting an equation. Yes, we can figure it out, but try sitting on your behind for hours on end and having to stop every so often in your design to figure out the units for an equation! Colorful language flows like anything!

Simply the best introductory book on aircraft engine design

Microsoft Access 97: Complete Concepts and Techiques
Published in Paperback by Course Technology (13 June, 1997)
Authors: Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, Philip J. Pratt, and Phillip J. Pratt
Average review score:

ACCESS 97
BOOK CONTAINS A LOT OF PICTURES WHICH MAKES IT VERY EASY FOR THE BEGINNING USER TO FOLLOW.

The Best way to Learn Microsoft Access97.
The use of screen prints to assist the reader/student in learning an application is not a new idea. What the authors have done here, though, is use them extensively throughout the book.

There are virtually no "blind spots" in the learning process. The reader simply cannot miss a step. I cannot stress how helpful this book has been in illustrating how Access works.

The projects the reader goes through are very practical and the different types of tests at the end of each project reinforce the learning. Highly recommended!

Offshore Pioneers: Brown & Root and the History of Offshore Oil and Gas
Published in Hardcover by Gulf Professional Publishing (December, 1997)
Authors: Joseph A. Pratt, Tyler Priest, and Christopher J. Castaneda
Average review score:

Decent history of the offshore oil&gas industry's beginnings
For anyone interested in the beginnings of the marine oil and gas industry, Offshore Pioneers provides a good general history. Since this book was commissioned by Brown & Root, you should expect a certain level of bias. Brown & Root's achievements are obviously highlighted while their defeats are understandably downplayed. This history includes the significant roles of other participants, though mainly in relation to Brown & Root, either as competitor, customer or co-venturer. Beginning with the first baby-steps in offshore exploration (long platforms connecting shore to site), this history lesson progresses to the innovation and ingenuity necessary to explore and exploit hydrocarbons from new environments, such as Lake Maracaibo, the Bay of Campeche, California (short lived program though it was) and the North Sea. As an offshore service analyst, I constantly seek out information on the industry, whether current or historical. Brown and Root did play a large role in the development of the offshore oil and gas industry, from constructing the first platforms out into the Gulf of Mexico, engineering massive North Sea structures, laying pipe in several environments, building construction barges and performing project management. My father had worked for the company for 25 years, and I had already developed an appreciation for their can-do attitude and willingness to work in any environment. If you're looking for a history of the industry's humble beginnings, this is a great book to read. However, Brown & Root ceased being a major force in the offshore energy industry during the 1980's, so don't expect to find any recent history in this work.

Giants of Offshore Oil Platforms
This is the history of Brown & Root's Marine Division. Drawing heavily from their knowledge of building warships during World War II, Brown & Root installed the first oil platform out of sight from land off the coast of Louisiana for the Kerr Magee Oil Company in 1947. This was Brown & Root's entry into the offshore construction market. They kept building and installing platforms in increasing depths of the Gulf of Mexico as well as venturing into offshore spots around the world, such as off the coast of Alaska and the most famous offshore location of the North Sea. The book details many of these large well known projects as well as Project Mohole, the cancelled program to drill into the Earth's core from an ocean drill ship. Brown & Root was a participant in this project. An interesting book for anyone who has worked in the offshore oil industry or has an interest in it.

A Pocket Guide to Hawai'i's Trees and Shrubs
Published in Paperback by Booklines Hawaii, Ltd. (March, 1999)
Author: H. Douglas Pratt
Average review score:

Neat pocket guide
This is just what the title promises: a pocket guide. As such it is high class, printed on glossy paper and profusely illustrated with high quality color pictures taken in the field. It takes the reader through the several vegetation zones of Hawai'i and presents the noteworthy plants, category by category. I can well imagine that this booklet will give visitors to Hawai'i much pleasure.

I am not so sure about this "reading beforehand" the other reviewer mentions: this will be a pretty brief read. Also too concise to serve as a field guide, with pictures that are awfully small. It really is a pocket guide only, but as such it is a gem.

The guide you should have
A truly superb guidebook; it is the one you should have to make sense of the profusion of exotic flora on the Islands. Other books show small selections of the trees and shrubs, with the result that the particular one in front of you is often omitted. Pratt has solved the problem for us; his book is comprehensive, beautiful, and easy to use. If you are planning a trip to the Islands, I recommend getting this book ahead of time. There is so much worth appreciating, it is time well spent getting oriented ahead of time. This guide is sure to become a classic.

Principles of Drug Action: The Basis of Pharmacology
Published in Paperback by Churchill Livingstone (May, 1990)
Authors: William B. Pratt and Palmer Taylor
Average review score:

Comprehensive but difficult to read
This is a very comprehensive and thorough textbook, recommended for graduate students in pharmacology programs, and NOT for medical students. It has good examples and covers a wide variety of topics in depth. However, the major drawback is that it is not written in the most "reader friendly" manner (i.e., have some coffee before you dive in). A fourth edition would be extremely welcome. Even minor layout and font changes would make a vast improvement.

The best book ever for molecular pharmacology
This book is a tough act to follow. It's not suitable for med students because it focuses more on how drugs act, rather than organizing the available drugs and how they act on a specific organ or system (e.g., the nervous sistem). If you need that, you'll probably need another great book: Goodman and Gilman's, that it's more suitable for med students. Pratt and Taylor's is written for chemists or for M.D. students that needs an in-depth cover of the molecular aspects of drug action: classification of receptor (biochemical, physiological, biophysical, etc), structure-activity relationships (QSAR), quantification of drug-receptor relationships, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The chapter about metabolism of drugs is amazing: it covers every reaction involved in reactions of phase I and phase II, clearly explaining what and why happens. Also, it covers in full, but very clear, detail, aspects such as chemical mutagenesis, carcinogensis and teratogenesis. It works fine not only with pharmacology, but with Toxicology as well. Indeed, a great book. Highly recommended!

Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (01 May, 1999)
Authors: Carlos W. Pratt, Kenneth J. Gill, Nora M. Barrett, and Melissa M. Roberts
Average review score:

Psychiatric Rehabilitation
In reviewing this book I found it to be interesting and educational at the same time. It is not dry reading for a subject that could well be that. I will be able to use this book in my clinical practice when I graduate this summer.

Superb introduction to psychosocial rehab for new clinicians
Superb introduction to psychosocial rehabilitation. Introduces the experiece of mental illness from the client's perspecitive, covers symptoms and etiology of severe and persistent mental illness as well as treatment strategies. The book is simply written using case illustrations. I have used it for new staff at our community mental health clinic for the past 2 years. The book was popular - so popular that it disappeared and I am replacing it with several copies, one for each team. I would recommend the book as a resource for any student of a mental health program or any staff person trying to get a handle on working effectively with clients who have severe and persistent mental illness.
